Christmas Thoughts – Christmas 08 #1

November 24, 2008

Christmas is easily one of my favourite times of year. Perhaps it’s because it’s around the same time as my birthday. Or the hype that goes with the Christmas and New Years rush. The beautiful summer weather (or the cold, wet and rainy summer weather, which is just as likely as sunshine here in the southern mainland of Australia!).

In Australia, Christmas is celebrated on 25 December every year, and falls in the first month of Summer. We also take 26th December as a holiday, ‘Boxing Day.’ New Year’s Day is 1 January and usually marks the beginnings of the very hot weather in the Victoria area. “Advent” is the name that some Christian churches give to the Christmas preparation season, offering time to reflect on the meaning behind Christmas.

I thought I’d take some time out to share a few thoughts on Christmas in the month to come, as a sort-of non-denominational pre-Christmas Advent devotional and musings column. I hope that it brings you some light, inspiration and excitement as we remind ourselves of the true meaning of the festive occasion.
