Today I picked up an “old friend” of a book – John Eldredge and Stasi Eldredge’s Captivating (2005). I simply can’t recommend it enough. It is one of the (sadly) very few Christian women’s books that I have read, and re-read, and been transformed by.

  1. I understand exactly what you mean by a book being an “old friend” and about the dearth of quality “Christian” books…

I have a “stable” of old standby books…very few written by Christians. Men’s books are generally pathetic, either dry as dust or so shallow you will stub your toe…

Perhaps we should be part of the solution?

  2. I agree. I hope to be part of the solution! Though I would be troubled if I were ever boxed into the Christian “genre”. CS Lewis, Tolkien, Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, writers like that – definitely Christian but transcended the often shallow legalistic barriers that Christian writing can impose and ultimately have reached a greater audience than typical Christian writing could.

Then again,I can credit a lot of Christian writers with having had a very powerful impact on my life and I shouldn’t let me often cynical moods get to me!
