399. Mermaid and little fish

February 10, 2010

Fineliner ink pen on paper, December 2009.

I’ve said it before (I think), that junk mail is an incredible source of ideas. These lingerie and underwear catalogues turn up in the letterbox. While in the past they were a source of distress as I compared myself to the models in the images, these days they’ve demonstrated a significant usefulness in sometimes inspiring ideas for my illustrations. Funny. That, and I don’t really worry about my figure so much these days. Well, not as often as I used to!

Somehow, this turned into a mermaid surrounded by cutesy sea creatures. Fun!

374. Evil Clowns deserve more attention

August 22, 2009

20090724-flokot-wp14

Ink fineliner on paper, July 2009.

There’s something hideous about clowns. Shudder! I don’t know what it is, nor do I know the origin of my fascination with evil clowns. There are Christmas-inspired elements here, too – namely the reindeer and the tinsel on the mast.

In terms of influences in my own life –

There’s an episode of the Simpsons where Rod and Todd Flanders poke a drunk and passed-out Krusty the Klown. They ask the question, ‘Do you think he’s evil?’

Then there’s all the clowns in heavy metal culture. Maybe its some weird horror movie thing. I don’t watch horror movies so I wouldn’t know…

I’m not sure if any of this makes much sense, but there it is. Enjoy!

Photos from the Bass Coast, Victoria, Australia. Situated on the South East of the Australian mainland, the Bass Coast is a beautiful stretch of beaches and Marine National Parks. It is notable for its fossils of dinosaurs and bird life – as well as being a spectacularly clean place. I grew up in the area and while I don’t live there anymore, I love travelling there to photograph and sketch it, and to make sure my suburban-raised children grow up knowing what a clean, syringe-free beach is like! The Gippsland Tourism website has information for travellers to the area, see: http://www.gippslandtourism.com.au/South-Gippsland/ and http://www.gippslandtourism.com.au/Bass-Coast/. I am always happy to share info on travelling  to the South Gippsland region, for any blog readers who are interested! The above photo was taken in Kilcunda, which is not far from Wonthaggi.

INRI – inspired by the Latinised abbreviation of “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.” I’ve made this as both a t-shirt (available in cuts and colours other than the default shown here). While I’ve generally avoided representations of Christianity in my t-shirts, and I on’t want to succumb to cheesiness, I felt that this was a labour of love. The brilliance, uniqueness and wonder of the Gospel – that Jesus died and rose again – means that the vile execution device of the Ancient Romans becomes a symbol of hope for millions of believers linked across the ages. Wow. I can’t begin to describe what Jesus means to me.

Other recent t-shirt designs include a winged horse and hmm another winged horse!

At the beach – this one has pelicans.

Two of them were biting each other – fighting over fish heads thrown by tourists on the pier!

This is a photo from my beachside honeymoon. I can’t believe I’ve been married over six years now. I’m only aged in my mid-20s. I don’t feel old enough to have been married that long!
