FiKaLo’s YouTube Channel

September 1, 2010

Add me on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/user/fizuleika

My channel is a bizarre mixture of favourited news parodies, Christian and Australian rock music, Ukrainian folk dance videos and videos by my friends. I can’t say that I’ve uploaded any of my own works; I’m not sure I’m willing to put myself out there in such a confronting medium. Then again, the temptation is to create some videos on how to pronounce Aussie words in a Victorian rural accent, like “emu”, and place names like “Moe” and “Korumburra”.

emu = eeeem-you not eee-moo

Moe = mow-eee not moe

Korumburra = kuh-rum-buh-rrah not kor-rum-bor-ah

Karnivool – Sound Awake

May 5, 2010

I have lost count of the number of times I’ve listened to Karnivool’s awesome album “Sound Awake” (2009 Sony EMI). My favourite song on the album seems to change according to my mood, but I particularly like “New Day” and “Simple Boy”.

So I figure that they definitely warrant a mention on here, as I find their music so beautiful, powerful and inspiring. It’s music like this that makes me feel pretty super about being an Australian (not that I didn’t feel good about my nationality already!), and it’s so exciting to hear some great melodic hard rock being made by my fellow Aussies.

I would probably describe them as being similar to Tool, but a lot happier and with Aussie accents… but I don’t want to box them in as being just an Australian answer to Tool, because Karnivool are a lot more diverse than that.

“All I Know” – Sound Awake

“Simple Boy” – Sound Awake

Karnivool’s singer Ian Kenny is also lead singer for Birds of Tokyo, another superb Australian band.

“Heard it Through the Grapevine” – Covered by Birds of Tokyo for Australian radio station Triple J.

“Wayside” – Birds of Tokyo

An Aussie, Reminiscing

March 25, 2008
Midnight Oil – “Blue Sky Mine”

My gut is wrenched out it is crunched up and broken
A life that is led is no more than a token
Who’ll strike the flint upon the stone and tell me why
If I yell out at night there’s a reply of bruised silence
The screen is no comfort I can’t speak my sentence
They blew the lights at heaven’s gate and I don’t know why

But if I work all day at the blue sky mine
(There’ll be food on the table tonight)
Still I walk up and down on the blue sky mine
(There’ll be pay in your pocket tonight)

(Lyrics excerpt from http://www.songmeanings.net/lyric.php?lid=116207.)
Songs that take me straight back to my childhood… Nothing like a hefty dose of Aussie rock. In this case, political social action rock.
Between the 1970s through to early 2000s, Midnight Oil had a number of popular albums. True to the political nature and social conscience of the band, their singer Peter Garrett is currently a member of Parliament with the Australian Labor Party, and is the Minister for Environment, Heritage and the Arts.
