443. Corset Girl With A Giant Head
May 10, 2011418. Young Woman In The Flowers
September 13, 2010August and September 2010 – hand drawn on paper, edited in Photoshop Elements 6 on a Wacom Bamboo Tablet.
It is with much joy that I have finally, after a long break, completed a new artwork. From beginning to end I worked for at least a month on this design, in between homework, essay writing and several nasty viruses.
The flowers in the image are inspired by examples of south-east Australian wildflowers that I found in a handbook to the Australian bush.
At the time of writing, I am selling t-shirts, postcards and greeting cards featuring this design. It can be found at my RedBubble Profile and Bubblesite Gallery.
416. Work in progress
August 27, 2010Here’s a screen grab preview of an illustration I’ve been working on for about two weeks now (in between study sessions and housework). I am hoping it will lend itself to a RedBubble t-shirt-friendly design.
The original fineliner outline was scanned and I have been using a brand new drawing tablet and Photoshop to clean and colour the image. It was inspired by a book I was reading at the time detailing wildflowers commonly found in Australia.
My desktop background is from Wikipdeia Commons and depicts Alamosaurus sanjuanensis. Just in case anyone was curious.
In other news, I submitted two short stories to a writing competition today. I’ve never managed to win so far but, as a compulsive writer, I’d be foolish to miss the opportunity!

I get a lot of enjoyment out of drawing with felt tip markers. Nothing quite beats their bright colours and strength.
412. Suburban Evening
July 23, 2010Ink fineliner and pencil shavings on paper, February 2010.
I love blackbirds singing in the evening. I love the feeling of connectedness that comes from seeing street lights shining in other parts of town from the windows at the back of our house. I love the bats.
I was trying to capture that sense of both belonging and the fall of night. I get this strange feeling that I’ve posted this illustration before!

I like cats, and I like acoustic guitars. Here’s both at the same time.

It’s a horse, with wings. Yes, I draw a lot of these! Napoleon Dynamite makes a lot of sense to me. Now for a Liger…

407. Birds and Heritage Vegetable Gardening
June 18, 2010Ink fineliner on paper, circa February 2010.
A bird on a pumpkin! I was reading a book on heritage vegetable gardening and felt so inspired by the beautiful fruits and vegetables that I decided to create an illustration representing that. I got the references for the birds from a book on Australian birds, though right now I can’t recall what kind of birds they are, exactly. I’m still working on my knowledge of Australian avians!

Evening song of the blackbird
May 12, 2010Ink fineliner and pencil on paper, October 2009.
One of my favourite times of day is the evening, when the blackbirds sit on the fence outside my kitchen window and sing their last songs for the day. We get bats arround here and they look fantastic, flying their way past the Moon in black clumsy silhouettes.
While I generally dislike the whole suburban living thing, there is something lovely about evenings, when the birds sing and the streetlights switch on, and I can hear people out walking their dogs and the scent of dinners wafting through the windows. It’s not all bad. This drawing is one of my many attempts to capture how I feel about this aspect of life in the suburbs.
I used pencil shavings to colour the illustration. I shave bits of the coloured pencil lead and smudge them into the paper. I feel it creates a smoother textured and better blended image than if I just used the pencils the normal way. This little trick was something I learnt at school many years ago, when I was about 8 years old. I haven’t forgotten it, and enjoy using it.

405. White’s thrush with Apple
May 5, 2010Ink fineliner on paper, November 2009.
Inspired by fruit and the bird Zoothera heinei – which was called a White’s thrush in the book I was reading (though it may be out of date).

April 7, 2010Original illustration: ink fineliner on paper, April 2010. This image is from the RedBubble t-shirt previewer.
I drew this as just a little sketch and my husband turned it into a RedBubble friendly t-shirt. I am very happy with how it turned out. If I can say so myself. I posted it here and here. The first one is my RedBubble Profile, the second is my Bubblesite. The Profile allows users to comment on images and favourite them, the Bubblesite is an online store.

February 24, 2010400! Parade of horses.
February 17, 2010Pencil on paper, 2009.
It seems somewhat fitting that the 400th illustration in my art folio would be a picture of horses, with a pegasus and unicorn joining the parade. For anyone that has been following my blog for even a short time will attest, I like horses and drawing horses. A lot.
My earliest blogged art folio pieces included mermaids and horses, way back in late 2006. Almost 4 years and 400 pieces later, looks like I’m still drawing horses and mermaids! I am happy to see that I have been able to explore new avenues (selling t-shirts, for example) with my art as I’ve hopefully improved and progressed. It has been fun interacting with other art and horse fans on the various sites, too, such as flickr.com and myspace.com.
This is one of my t-shirt designs that I recently added to redbubble.com. RedBubble’s t-shirt previewer (which I first spotted on the site early February 2010) brings it to life. I think it does, anyway!
Here’s the same illlustration as seen through RedBubble’s t-shirt previewer.
More info on this as a t-shirt at my bubblesite.
399. Mermaid and little fish
February 10, 2010Fineliner ink pen on paper, December 2009.
I’ve said it before (I think), that junk mail is an incredible source of ideas. These lingerie and underwear catalogues turn up in the letterbox. While in the past they were a source of distress as I compared myself to the models in the images, these days they’ve demonstrated a significant usefulness in sometimes inspiring ideas for my illustrations. Funny. That, and I don’t really worry about my figure so much these days. Well, not as often as I used to!
Somehow, this turned into a mermaid surrounded by cutesy sea creatures. Fun!
