This seemed to me to be a fitting image for the end of my art folio on this, The Amalgamation blog.

Ink fineliner and pencil shavings on paper, February 2010.
I love blackbirds singing in the evening. I love the feeling of connectedness that comes from seeing street lights shining in other parts of town from the windows at the back of our house. I love the bats.
I was trying to capture that sense of both belonging and the fall of night. I get this strange feeling that I’ve posted this illustration before!
Pencil on paper, October 2009.
I had a dream a few years ago about a giant beach surrounded by ruins and an apocalyptic red sky. I wrote it down at the time and this is one of several attempted interpretations of the dream – which was a lot more intense and brooding than this illustration, I must admit.

One of my favourite times of day is the evening, when the blackbirds sit on the fence outside my kitchen window and sing their last songs for the day. We get bats arround here and they look fantastic, flying their way past the Moon in black clumsy silhouettes.
While I generally dislike the whole suburban living thing, there is something lovely about evenings, when the birds sing and the streetlights switch on, and I can hear people out walking their dogs and the scent of dinners wafting through the windows. It’s not all bad. This drawing is one of my many attempts to capture how I feel about this aspect of life in the suburbs.
I used pencil shavings to colour the illustration. I shave bits of the coloured pencil lead and smudge them into the paper. I feel it creates a smoother textured and better blended image than if I just used the pencils the normal way. This little trick was something I learnt at school many years ago, when I was about 8 years old. I haven’t forgotten it, and enjoy using it.

It seems somewhat fitting that the 400th illustration in my art folio would be a picture of horses, with a pegasus and unicorn joining the parade. For anyone that has been following my blog for even a short time will attest, I like horses and drawing horses. A lot.
My earliest blogged art folio pieces included mermaids and horses, way back in late 2006. Almost 4 years and 400 pieces later, looks like I’m still drawing horses and mermaids! I am happy to see that I have been able to explore new avenues (selling t-shirts, for example) with my art as I’ve hopefully improved and progressed. It has been fun interacting with other art and horse fans on the various sites, too, such as flickr.com and myspace.com.
This is one of my t-shirt designs that I recently added to redbubble.com. RedBubble’s t-shirt previewer (which I first spotted on the site early February 2010) brings it to life. I think it does, anyway!
Here’s the same illlustration as seen through RedBubble’s t-shirt previewer.

I see this as typical of my attempts to try and recreate the childish joy of inventing and imagining strange new creatures. Admittedly, this one is not hugely unusual – if anything, it resembles a purple version of any number of birds typically found around this area of Australia. However, it was fun to draw and isn’t that, really, the point? To have fun and be expressive and explore ideas?
Information on this drawing as an art print and greeting card can be found at my RedBubble.Com Bubblesite.
Mixed media, July 2009.
This is a collage of my various horse sketches and bird sketches, all glued together! The birds are mostly inspired by southern Australian native species. The horses are mostly inspired by Arabian horses.
It’s available as a card or laminated print at my Bubblesite at RedBubble.Com.
Watercolour pencil, watercolour pencil and colour pencil on paper, July 2009.
This is a bit of a flashback piece for me – more akin to the type of stuff I was drawing in the late 1990s / early 2000s! A little inner Goth that keeps trying to crawl out… Admittedly, this one is relatively colourful when compared to some of my teenage years drawings.
I’ve made this painting available as an art print and greeting card, see http://flokot.redbubble.com/sets/79778/works/3471712-2-girl for more information.

This drawing was inspired by the desert-style horse. I guess I got its general body shape from Akhal-Teke style horses. The cupcakes are inspired by… umm… cupcakes.
